Remembering the Ones We Lost
Hello everyone. While we have been blessed with several wonderful foals this week I do have to report that unfortunately, we have also lost two. I know this happens at least once each year but it is never easy. I came across the first foal yesterday while out checking horses. He was a colt with a big star and one back sock. He had already passed by the time I arrived so I cannot say what happened. I believe I know who the mother is but since I was not there to see him with her I cannot say for certain. I have done this long enough to recognize the behavior of a mare who has lost her foal but because it would only be speculation, I will not be sharing her name. Just know he was beautiful, loved, and will be missed.
The second foal we lost is the adorable filly you see below. She was born yesterday morning to Mare River of Sidekick’s band. When I first saw her she seemed to be struggling a little but I assumed it was because she was new. After watching her for a while, she was getting around better and when I left I felt she would be alright. Unfortunately, that was not the case. I went back out today to check on her and she was no longer with the band. I decided to search the area for her and after following some clues I was able to find her remains.
Both of these foals were a part of the Theodore Roosevelt National Park family and deserve to be recognized. Finding a deceased foal is never easy but had they not been found we may have never known they existed. Rest in peace sweet babies and know you were loved in the short time you were here.
