Remembering Grady

It is with extremely heavy hearts that we share the unexpected passing of band stallion Grady (Roosevelt). He was the 2015 colt out of mare Lacey by stallion Clinker. He was recently seen by several photographers and park visitors fighting two other stallions, mainly Arcola. After two days of conflict, Arcola took control of the band, and Grady walked off to rest. However, after we had not seen him for several days, a fellow horse tracker went searching and located his remains. We cannot say for sure the fighting led to his death, as he has also struggled with a significant injury for years. No matter what the cause was, we once again were taken by surprise and lost a beloved park stallion.
When thinking about the events of the past eleven years of Grady’s life inside Theodore Roosevelt National Park, it amounts to a lot. Way more than I can put in one post. I decided the best way to share about this wonderful horse is to tell you his story in the photos below. Like many stallions before him, he made the most of his time in the park. These photos are only a small look at his time, so please scroll through and remember him along with us. Run wild and free forever, Grady, and know that you are loved.

Wind Dancer was really good with him ❤

Wind Dancer and Grady in October of 2015. Grady is five months old.

Grady in October of 2016. He is a year and half old and very curious.

Grady still with Clinker’s band in April of 2017. Things would soon change for the entire band.

In June of 2017, I found Grady as a bachelor. Stallion Frontier had become strong enough to take most of Clinker’s band and pushed then two-year-old Grady into bachelorhood at the same time.

Grady ran with several buddies but spent a lot of time with stallion Ranger until he got his first band in late summer 2018.

After Ranger got his band, Grady started to run with his younger brother Volt and Circus. Occasionally Casper would join them as well. Here they are in October of 2018. (l to r: Grady, Volt, Casper, and Circus)

Grady got his first band in August of 2019 when he took his old buddy Ranger’s band. Also, around that time, Gigi had just given birth to her colt, Arcola. Here they are in November of 2019 after being with Grady for a few months. (l to r: Twister, Gigi, Arcola, Grady, and Blondie)

In 2021, Grady would add two more girls to his band, yearlings Pixie and Badger.
