Remembering Luna

Hello everyone. Today, I have sad news to share from the park. Over the weekend, two-year-old filly Luna, out of mare Little Gray, was found down not far from the loop road. She was unable to get up on her own, so the park was immediately contacted. Over the course of two days, park staff responded to help her several times. On day two, the decision was made to euthanize her humanely. It is currently unknown what was wrong with Luna, but some tests will be conducted that we hope will produce a possible answer.
On this page, I generally refrain from discussing the park staff or their work. However, today it’s necessary to break that rule just a little because they truly deserve a thank you for their efforts. They did everything they could for Luna. Even though this is their job, they are still human, and situations like this are not easy. So, I extend my deepest gratitude to all those involved.
In closing, I would like to share about Luna and her brief time inside Theodore Roosevelt National Park. She was born in April of 2023 to Little Gray, and her presumed sire is Wildrye. When she was around five months old, her band, which included big brother Ryely, big sister Pippi, and mom Little Gray, was picked up by stallion Guardian. They would stay with Guardian until June of 2024, when they were found and picked up by Buster. As Buster’s band grew, Luna had several young mares to spend time with, but was often seen by her big sister’s side. She may not have been with us for long, but she was an important member of this herd and is already missed. Below is a look at Luna over the past two years. Run wild and free forever, Luna, and know that you were loved
