Remembering Tanker

Hello everyone. It is with a heavy heart that we share the news of the loss of 24-year-old Mare Tanker. Unfortunately, she was separated from her band this past winter; however, we were able to keep an eye on her. In February, Carol documented her one last time. That photo helped us narrow down the search area, which ultimately led to the discovery of her remains this past weekend.
Tanker walked alongside Punkin, her 2009 filly, in Half Moon’s band for a large part of the last ten years. Though they were separated a few times, they always managed to find their way back to one another. Tanker also played a significant role in helping Punkin care for several of her foals over the years, including Patches (Maine) and Moon Shadow.
We all have special memories of Tanker, but one of the most remarkable moments I witnessed was when she confronted the then-three-year-old Guardian. He wasn’t always well-liked by the mares in Half Moon’s band and one day, Tanker seemed to have had enough. I caught sight of her by the park boundary, challenging him. As someone who was fairly new to tracking, I had never seen a mare stand up to a young stallion like that! She faced him head-on, even rearing up, and ultimately sent him back to his dam, Sumac.
While some mares may not always be shared as much as others on social media, they still leave a lasting mark on the herd and those who know them well. Tanker was one of those mares and is already greatly missed. We are grateful for her 24 years spent in the park and the wonderful memories she has left us. Below are a few photos of Tanker over the past ten years. Run wild and free forever, Tanker, and know that you were loved.
