Remembering Little Gray

It is with a heavy heart that we share the news of the passing of the beautiful 22-year-old mare, Little Gray. Several horse trackers had been keeping an eye on her in her corner of the park. Recently, we noticed that Cagney (Hep) was moving around more and had not been seen standing with her. Through collaborative efforts, we were able to narrow down her last known location and found her remains over the weekend.
When thinking of Little Gray, the first thing that comes to mind is what an amazing mother she was to so many foals. In her later years, she had the joy of running with three of them—Pippi, Ryely, and Luna—in the same band. After several changes, she and her girls eventually joined Buster’s (Illinois) band until Luna’s passing last year. During that time, Little Gray struggled with an injury that often slowed her down. She was separated from the band soon after and ultimately ended up with Cagney, spending her final days with him.
Below, you will find a collection of photos of Little Gray with some of her foals, as well as a couple of pictures from Eileen, taken during Little Gray’s time with Little Sorrel’s band. We were truly blessed to have more than two decades with this remarkable mare. She lived her entire life wild and free, contributing so much to this herd. Her memory will continue to live on through her foals inside and outside the park. Run wild and free forever, Little Gray, and know you were deeply loved.
