Remembering Our Beloved Mystery

Hello everyone. I want to start today by thanking you all for the loving comments you wrote on Facebook regarding the late stallion Mystery. Many of you only know him from stories and photos shared on social media but I know you mourn his loss as much as any of us who knew him. I would also like to thank you for being patient with me as I took the time to process what we saw before writing this post. In all honesty, I think a part of me was in denial or shock over what happened even after seeing he had passed with my own eyes. I don’t think any of us are ever prepared for a loss of one of these horses and losing Mystery was unexpected, to say the least.

For those who may be new to the horses and not know much about him, he was a 16-year-old stallion at the time of his passing and was holding a band of 7 mares and 3 new fillies. He has sired many other foals through the years, some of which remain in the park today.

As far as his passing, none of us were there so we will never know exactly what occurred. I can tell you though that based on what we saw around him and the location of his body that it appears to be an unfortunate accident. It could have happened while fighting, snaking his girls, or any number of things but again, no one was present when he passed, and no one will ever be able to say what happened for sure. The terrain out here is rough in some areas and unfortunately, accidents do happen.

The images below of Mystery are favorites of mine that I took over the last few years. I consider myself extremely lucky to have photos and memories of him to cherish for years to come. He was an extraordinary stallion and will be missed.

Thank you again for all your support and love during a difficult time. It was not the outcome any of us wanted but I am grateful he was found so we all can have some sort of closure. We can also take comfort in the fact that he lived his entire life wild and free. RIP Mystery and know that you were loved by many

2004 Stallion, Mystery – This photo was taken this past winter. I had followed Mystery as he walked away from the band to check the surrounding area. He looked gorgeous with the snowy butte behind him.

2004 Stallion, Mystery – I do not think I have ever shared this photo of Mystery before. He had stopped to drink at a waterhole near the road and was keeping an eye on Red Face’s band as they approached the area.
