Remembering Sidekick

Hello everyone. With a heavy heart, we report today that 2004 Band Stallion, Sidekick, has passed away. His remains were seen by a volunteer yesterday, who reported the information to me and another volunteer. She and I hiked in and discovered the horse was Sidekick. His body showed no signs of the cause of death other than it was recent, most likely less than 12 hours. While we are extremely saddened by his passing, we are grateful he was seen so that we could locate him in a timely manner and give closure to those who loved him.
Sidekick was a long-time band stallion often seen next to his main gal, Mist. For years, we also identified his band quickly by looking for his ‘three gray girls’: Bella, Snip’s Gray, and River. He still has several foals inside the park, including mare Valentina and three-year-old colts Chance and Knight, who are all with the band.
Sidekick was small but fierce and, at 20 years old, still could hold a band and be a dominant presence amongst the other stallions. He was amazing to watch in action, and his strong personality will be missed in this herd. Below is a look at Sidekick over the past ten years. We are grateful for the years we had with him and that he died in the only place he has ever called home. Run wild and free forever, Sidekick, and know that you were loved ❤

Stallions Copper and Sidekick fighting in the summer of 2015. This went on for a few days and included several stallions.

This was the first time I saw Sidekick. I remember texting Eileen and describing what he looked like so she could help me figure out who I was looking at. (May 2015)
